The Impact of Online Reputation and Consumer-Generated Content on E-Commerce Pricing and Sales Performance

E-commerce platforms operate as hybrid socio-technical infrastructures in which consumer-generated content and reputation signals influence both demand formation and pricing strategies. This paper examines how online reputation systems and consumer-generated content affect e-commerce pricing and sales performance from a systems perspective, emphasizing structural trade-offs, governance mechanisms, platform architecture, and policy consequences. The analysis focuses on the transformation of word of mouth into scalable digital feedback, the aggregation of quality signals, and the ways in which these signals enter dynamic pricing and revenue management systems. The discussion addresses feedback loops between rating distributions and demand, the moderating role of product characteristics, reviewer identity, and market context. It further considers the fragility of reputation infrastructure under manipulation, selection biases, discrimination, and polarization of visible evaluations. The paper argues that reputation is not merely an informational surface but an institutional governance layer that shapes competitive dynamics, platform trust, and regulatory exposure. Deployment challenges such as cold start, review inflation, herding, and algorithmic bias are examined and connected to fairness, sustainability, and long-term platform viability. By integrating empirical and conceptual literature, the paper provides an interdisciplinary account of how consumer-generated content becomes embedded in pricing architectures and sales performance. It closes with implications for platform governance, sustainable reputation design, and policy frameworks that balance innovation with market integrity.
